The first sale is one person. Not a cohort, not a conversion rate, not a funnel with a wide top and a narrow bottom. One person, whose name you will probably still remember in a year, deciding that the thing you made is worth more to them than the money sitting in their account. The decision takes about ninety seconds. From the outside it is invisible.
I mention this because most advice about first sales is written as though you are trying to move a crowd. You are not. You are trying to move one person, and the tactics for one person are different, mostly cheaper, and mostly involve talking to someone.
The first buyer usually half knows you already
For a complete stranger to buy from you, three unlikely things have to happen in a single sitting. They have to find you. They have to decide you are not a scam. They have to want the thing, right then, at that price. Each of those is a coin flip at best, and you are asking for three in a row from someone who opened the app to look at cats.
Someone who already follows you has done the first two. That is the whole advantage. It is not a small one.
I do not have a survey to hand and I am not going to invent one. What I can say is that the reasoning holds up in both directions: if a stranger buys first, brilliant, but you should not plan around it, because the plan requires three coin flips and you only control one of them.
This is where people object that a sale to someone who already knows you is not a real sale. It is a real sale. The money is real, the postage is real, the refund policy you have not written yet is about to become real. What it is not is proof that you can sell to strangers. Those are two different pieces of information and the first one arrives much earlier than the second.
What it actually looks like
A Tuesday. Not a launch day.
They had seen the thing three or four times before, not once. The post that sold it was not your best post. It was probably the fourth restatement of something you had already said, the one you nearly did not bother publishing because you felt you were repeating yourself. You were repeating yourself. That is how anyone hears anything.
Then a message. And the message is almost never about you. It is about logistics. Does it ship to Ireland. Is the sizing generous. Does it work on Android. Is this a subscription or do I pay once. Can I get it before the fourteenth. Nobody has ever bought a first product because they were moved by the founder story in the bio.
You answer in eleven minutes, because you are refreshing the app anyway, and then there is an email from Shopify or Gumroad or Etsy with a subject line you will screenshot.
That is the funnel. Someone saw it repeatedly, asked one boring question, got a fast answer, and paid. The optimisation available to you at this stage is: answer the boring question quickly, and put the answer where the next person can find it without having to ask.
One more thing, and it is annoying. They will not be able to tell you why they bought. If you ask, and you should ask, you will get "it looked nice" or "I needed one anyway". People are not reliable narrators of their own purchases. Take the answer, note it down, do not build a strategy on it.
The number that is not a number
Eleven people visited your page and none of them bought. That is not a zero per cent conversion rate. That is eleven people, which is not enough people to have a rate at all. Flip a coin four times and get four tails and you have not discovered anything about the coin.
This matters because the instinct at that point is to change everything. New price, new photos, new name, new page. Then twelve more people arrive, none of them buy either, and now you cannot tell which change did nothing because all of them did nothing, individually and together, at a sample size where nothing is measurable.
What small numbers are good for is the qualitative stuff. Where did those eleven come from. What did the two who messaged actually ask. Did anyone get as far as the checkout and stop. That last one you can usually see in the shop's own dashboard, and it is worth more than any traffic figure, because a checkout abandonment is a person with their card out who changed their mind, and the reason is often stupid and fixable. Postage was £6.99 on a £9 item. There was no card they had. The delivery estimate said three weeks.
Advertising deserves a short paragraph here, because it is where small budgets go to die politely. Ad platforms work by finding more people who resemble the people who already bought. If nobody has bought, there is nothing to resemble. You are asking the machine to optimise towards an event that has never occurred, and it will spend your money learning that. Ads make a working thing bigger. They are a poor instrument for finding out whether the thing works, and at fifteen pounds a day you will not buy enough data to argue with. If you have not had a sale yet, the money is better spent on samples, or postage, or nothing.
The bit between the tap and the till
Here is a small problem that shows up right about now. You have one link allowed in your bio and more than one place the money could come from. The shop. The one product that actually sells. The Etsy listing that ranks. The WhatsApp number for custom orders. The newsletter you started and have not sent.
RelayMe is a page for that. The free plan takes no card and does not expire, and it has unlimited links on it, which is the part that matters when you are still working out which link is the one. You get your own photo and bio, social icons, five themes, headings and dividers so the shop is not sitting immediately above a Spotify link like they are equals, a QR code for anything printed, and a story-sized share image. There are tap and view counts, so after a week you can see that forty people looked at the page and eleven tapped the shop and nobody at all tapped the newsletter.
What the counts do not tell you is why nobody tapped the newsletter. They tell you what happened, not what people were thinking, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend a number is an explanation. At forty visitors it is barely even what happened. It is a hint.
RelayMe is also, honestly, part of the problem I have been describing, and I would rather be the one to say it. RelayMe cannot take money. There are no payments and no custom domains, and there is no plan to pretend otherwise this month. The sale happens somewhere else, on Shopify or Gumroad or Etsy or Ko-fi, and RelayMe is the corridor between the profile and the till. A corridor is a useful thing to have and a bad thing to overvalue. If you are choosing between spending an evening on your link page and spending it answering three messages in your inbox, answer the messages. If you want the honest version of where RelayMe loses to the obvious alternative, the comparison page has four rows where Linktree wins, including that one.
The paid plan is $30 a year, or $4 a month, plus VAT. It adds all 47 themes, all 8 fonts, custom colours, a background image, per-link images, scheduled links, inline players, email capture, and it removes the RelayMe badge. None of that will cause your first sale. Email capture is the one worth having afterwards, when you have someone to email. Data is held in the EU, the fonts are self-hosted, and there is no advertising and no third-party analytics on the page, which I mention mainly because it is true and rarely is.
Things that reliably do not produce a first sale
The logo. The second logo. The name change. The seventh rewrite of the bio, which is now four words long and says nothing. Waiting until the range is complete, because the range is never complete, that is what a range is. Buying a course about getting your first sale from someone whose only demonstrated skill is selling courses about getting your first sale. There is a longer piece about where the money in those offers actually comes from if you want it.
Also on the list: posting once and concluding it does not work. The fourth restatement is the one that sells. You will find this unbearable and you should do it anyway.
After
The second sale is not automatic and often takes longer than the first, which nobody warns you about and which feels like a bug. It is not. The first one came from your warmest contact. The second has to come from slightly colder ground.
While it is fresh, write down what happened. Where they came from, what they asked, what you said, how long the reply took. Not for a spreadsheet. For the version of you in three weeks who has forgotten and is redesigning the page instead.
Then put the answer to their question somewhere permanent. On the listing, in the pinned comment, as a line on your RelayMe page under a heading that says Postage. Every person who does not have to ask is one fewer coin flip.
And reply to the messages. That is genuinely most of it.
